There is a long history of studies which investigated the optimal germination conditions of individual species. During the last few years, research has focused more on studying the relationship between germination and various species characteristics. Most of these studies, however, have used only one temperature during the germination tests, with only a few studies using more than one temperature. Recent studies comparing germination rates between rare and common species have included just a few species. The aim of this study was to identify determinants of germination and find relationships between germination and characteristics of rare species of the Giant Mts (Krkonoše in Czech, Karkonosze in Polish). Germination was tested over several consecutive temperatures with the seeds placed either in light or in dark. The results show that germination requirements of species are determined by time of flowering, seed mass, dispersal mode, species requirements for soil humidity and nutrients, and type of vegetation in which the species live.
