Viola lutea Huds. subsp. sudetica (Willd.)
Viola lutea huds. subsp. sudetica (Willd.) Nyman, hereinafter called V. l. sudetica, from the family of Violaceae is a Sudetes-Carpathian subendemic species with small area in the eastern Alps in Austria. In the Czech part of the Giant Mts it is classifi ed as a strongly endangered taxon (C2, §2) and in the Polish part of the Giant Mts as a critically endangered taxon (C1). The contemporary occurrence in the Czech part of the Giant Mts is monitored at 28 meadow enclaves, mostly in the eastern and central part of the Giant Mts. Within these enclaves other localities with mostly low abundances of V. l. sudetica were distinguished. In the Czech part of the Giant Mts, a decreasing trend in the number of V. l. sudetica´s habitats was found compared to historical data. Most localities rank with the alliances of Nardion strictae Braun-Blanquet 1926 and Nardo strictae-Agrostion tenuis Sillinger 1933. Whereas meadows with V. l. sudetica in primary forest-free area require no intervention, it is necessary to maintain the continuation of traditional methods of management at localities with semi-natural character. Inappropriate management or its complete absence leads to decrease number of V. l. sudetica and also total species diversity. The biggest threat for this taxon today is probably introgressive hybridization, i.e. crossbreeding with introduced taxa Viola tricolor agg. and Viola x wittrockiana from Melanium section, where is also V. l. sudetica ranked. Hybridization and hybrid swarm of these violets in the Giant Mts were discovered in the 1970´s. At fi rst sight hybrids differ in the fl oral corolla morphology. Various morphotypes differing in the size, colour, shape or design of corolla were observed at many localities. Hybrids are spreading mainly on anthropogenic, disturbed habitats near paths or buildings, but the current trend shows that they are also able to expand into meadow plant communities, too.
