V letech 1959 a 1963 byly zřízeny Karkonoski Park Narodowy a Krkonošský národní park. Spolupráce vědeckých rad ředitelů obou parků a založení sborníku Opera Corcontica, jehož 52 ročníků představuje unikátní regionální databázi pro výměnu vědeckých a ochranářských poznatků. Trvalá spolupráce českých a polských ochranářů a vědců nesmírně napomohla v péči o geobiodiverzitu Krkonoš.
Two milestones of nature conservation in the Giant Mountains are connected with the years 1959 and 1963. The establishment of the Karkonosze and Krkonoše National Parks (KPN, KRNAP) was the beginning of more than a half-century history of changes in the Giant Mts. Intensive tourism development and its impacts on mountain nature, dieback of forests due to air pollution, intricate ways of solving the air pollution disaster – these were the impulses for an collaboration between scientists and conservationists on both sides of the mountains, how to prevent increasing anthropogenic pressures. Cooperation of both national parks has supported creation of the joint scientifi c journal Opera Corcontica, whose 52 volumes represent an unique database for the Exchange of scientifi c knowledge and conservation experiences. Good communication between Czech and Polish conservationists and scientists tremendously helped in protection of biodiversity of the Giant Mts. There is the common strategy for the care of mountain roads. In this case, the managers of both parks support the well-defi ned social relationships between the residents and the parks. Over the years, the Giant Mts’ future looks much better, the forests here are not dying and they are green again. The people in mountains are cooperating well regardless of the border. The emblem of two transboundary national Parks in the world became the symbol of cooperation. Let it be an expression of the good coexistence of all people of good will, who are not indifferent to the fate of the Giant Mts.
