The aim of the two-year (2011 and 2012) project was to describe the infl uence of housing development on surrounding grassland vegetation. The data were evaluated on the basis of a special monitoring plot design in four localities in the Krkonoše Mts (the Giant Mts). The described parameters were distance from a building, position on a slope and some characteristics of the building. We estimated their effect on species structure, number of species and Simpson´s diversity index. Negative infl uences of infrastructure were also studied. For the purpose of this study, an index of degradation was proposed. The results show that the proposed index of degradation is the most proper parameter for evaluating vegetation changes at a small scale. Species number and Simpson´s diversity index do not refl ect the changes in vegetation quality around buildings. Most of the species indicating degradation are concentrated within 10 m surrounding of a building and degradation decreases signifi cantly in 30 m distance. There is a shift in degradation intensity down the slope below a building. The negative effect of a road does not exceed a 5 m distance from the road.
