Poznání procesů a formulování fenoménu krkonošské arkto-alpínské tundry (1995) představuje jednu z nejvýznamnějších syntéz našeho novodobého poznání přírodních hodnot Krkonoš. Po vyřešení problémů terminologických a biogeografi ckých následovalo vhodné označení, vyjádřené spojením pojmů arkto-alpínský v nejširším biogeografi ckém pojetí. Spolupráce se zahraničními institucemi vyústila v podrobné srovnání jednotlivých složek geobiodiverzity hercynských a skandinávských pohoří. Poznání shodných či podobných mechanizmů, ovlivňujících v průběhu postglaciálu severská pohoří a pohoří střední a západní Evropy, vedlo k formulování specifi k, kterými je fenomén krkonošské arkto-alpínské tundry unikátní v kontextu hercynských středohor. Podrobná analýza severských smilkových trávníků na hřebenech Krkonoš a jejich odlišnost od alpských či karpatských smilkových luk nebo rozsáhlé diskuse stran některých současných reliéfových tvarů, jejich stáří a geneze (palsy, horské růžencové toky) vyjadřují potřebu podrobného mezioborového výzkumu. Stav poznání se odráží v aktivitách Správy KRNAP (moderní výzkum, dlouhodobý monitoring, aktivní management návštěvnosti, redukce některých nevhodných klečových v místech s mrazovým tříděním reliéfu, účinná forma informací o unikátním prostředí tundry). Probíhající procesy klimatických změn rovněž vyžadují zvýšenou pozornost, kterou je třeba této exklávě severských jevů uprostřed Evropy věnovat.
The description of the Giant Mtsʼarctic-alpine tundra phenomenon (1995) is one of the most important syntheses of modern knowledge of the Giant Mtsʼ natural values. After resolving the terminology and biogeographical problems, a suitable connection between both terms - arctic and alpine (in the widest sense of using these terms), was offered. Cooperation between Czech and Polish scientists and with institutes abroad enabled a wide comparison of the resemblance, as well as differences, in the geo-biodiversity in the context of other European middle-mountains and resulted in a signifi cant shift in our knowledge. Comprehension of identical or similar processes, affecting the north, west and the centre of Europe during the Postglacial, has allowed the formulating priorities for which the Giant Mtsʼtundra is currently considered a unique phenomenon in the Hercynian middlemountains. Analysis of the northern Nardus grasslands on the Giant Mts ridges and their divergence from those habitats in the Alps and the Carpathians or wide discussion about age and genesis of some current relief forms (e.g. palsa like phenomenon, mountain beaded streams) also demonstrates the requisite for detailed interdisciplinary analyses. This is refl ected in the activities of the KRNAP Administration (research, monitoring, appropriate form of management activities, such as the active care of tourist load, reduction of inappropriate mountain pine plantations in areas with frost sorting relief processes, convincing ways of offering information about these exceptional items). The ongoing processes of climate change require that increased attention is devoted to this small island of tundra in the middle of Europe.
