Souhrn anglicky:
The article contains an answer to the criticism of J. Fanta referring to a treatise in Opera Corcontica on the layering of European beech (Fagus sylvatica) in the Giant Mts. The authors defend the priority of their long-term research performed in sample plots situated far from the reviewer´s misleadingly described locality. The study contains original observations, quantification and mapping of layered near-the-ground branches in beech and provides a first insight into the role of clonal growth in a stand mixed with Norway spruce at the alpine timberline. This treatment obviously is in contrast with occasionally printed notes on individual roots (mostly rootlets) accidentally dug out in extreme ecological positions. The occurrence of anatomically thickened adventitious roots was systematically inspected by careful digging and uncovering in a natural mountain forest stand, which was followed by counting, measuring and mapping in relation to site factors and the stem structure of the relevant individual trees and shrubs. Photographs, tables and graphs support the reasoning expressed in the text. Due to the technical limits of Opera Corcontica, part of the photographic documentation was not published in the criticized article; therefore one additional figure accompanies the present article. Critical statements of the reviewer with regard to incomplete coverage of the given subject also cannot be accepted. Both authors did not intend to publish a monograph or textbook chapter and preferred a specialized study suitable for a regional scientific journal.
