Summit plateau of the Izera Mts (Góry Izerskie - Jizerské hory) is cut by valleys of a number of rivers. Izera valley is situated between the Grzbiet Wysoki and Grzbiet Średni (Střední hřeben jizerský) ridges and is distinguished by exceptional natural conditions. This area is influenced by precipitation and thermal parameters which are characteristic for the top parts of the Karkonosze Mts, and which determine the hydrological regime and channel processes. In the valley there are also peat bogs of high environmental values. This work characterizes a relief of an upper segment of the Izera valley. On the basis of terrain observations, analysis of cartographic materials, air photographs and high resolution DEM (0,6 × 0,6 m) produced from LIDAR data, it was determined that the valley floor of the Izera river is characterized by high dynamics of fluvial processes which are connected with extreme flooding episodes. The channel was modified by avulsion many times in the historical period. Some aspects of fluvial processes could be connected with changes in land use within the drainage area resulting from, e.g., felling or spruce forest degradation in the seventies and eighties of the 20th century. Moreover, in the periods between extreme events, sinuosity of meandering is intensified by bank erosion and thermoabrasion. Authors estimated that the rate of Izera river channel migration is 0.3-0.5 m per year. An analysis of accumulation forms allowed for identification of three principal zones which play important roles in delivery of rubble material to the channel of the Izera river. These zones are associated with the main Izera tributaries. These streams erode periglacial slope covers and weathered outcrops. A considerable delivery of rubble material to the channel of the Izera river through its tributaries is a primary factor responsible for the transformation of the channel and the distribution of accumulation zones. Contemporary fluvial processes are active within two lowest, Holocene terraces. In the morphology of the valley there are also two higher Holocene terraces and one Pleistocene terrace, none of which is currently undergoing transformation.
XX.
