Basing on the homogeneous hourly values of air temperature obtained from 4 synoptic stations of Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (Śnieżka, Jelenia Góra, Legnica and Wrocław-Strachowice) for the period 1998-2007, six different methods of calculating mean air temperature with different time steps were evaluated and compared with the real (24 hour) method. The analysed stations represent the top zone of the Karkonosze Mountains and its foreland and the only weather stations disposing of the standard hourly air temperature measurements for the period under discussion in this geographic region of Poland. Thermal characteristics calculated by the methods discussed, as well as differences in daily mean air temperature between the individual methods and the real method were similar. The only exception was method used in IMGW climatological stations from 1996 till present, whose results showed the were clearly underestimated from the results obtained using the real method. Method based on the evaluation of daily mean air temperature from eight synoptic dates appeared to be most precise compared to the real method. The value of the difference between mean air temperatures calculated using a given method and the real mean air temperature depends first and foremost on the choice of the method used to calculate this mean.
