The research deals with genetic variation of probably autochtonous Norway spruce (Picea abies) populations in the Protected Landscape Area (PLA) Jizerské hory Mts. Studied stands were chosen on the basis of historical research. Total amount of observed populations was 8 and were mostly older than 150 years. Each population was represented by 50 trees. Isoenzyme analysis was the first method that we used. Protein extract which was investigated was acquired from diploid tissue of dormant buds. Altogether 11 polymorphic isozyme locuses were evaluated. Differences in genetic structure among the populations were rather minimal or inconsiderable. We suppose that if at least one of the investigated populations was autochtonous, then the others should be of the same origin. Therefore, the selected stands are from the viewpoint of forest ecosystem management suitable for seed harvesting for further reproduction and reforestation. The second method was the assessment of morphological variation of Norway spruce phenotypes. Twelve morphological traits were investigated (stem form, bark type, crown width and form, branch strength, form of branching etc.). The observed populations corresponded with expected trends and characteristics of spruce ecotypes. For example, with increasing altitude decreased the average tree height, increased the rate of tapering stems at the expense of full-boled forms, grew the share of overhanging branches and decreased the number of horizontal branches, the comb-shaped form of branching decreased in favour of bunch- and slab-shaped forms. The investigated populations have shown considerable morphological polymorphism, which should be considered in forest management.
