In this article I describe the history of the constructions of the Śnieżka peak in modern times. Starting from the end of the 17th century, the place had a symbolic value for both visitors and locals. The St. Laurent chapel was the first object to be constructed, and in the 19th century tourist infrastructure followed. Since 1900 the Śnieżka peak has been also the location of a German meteorological observatory. However, since nationalism emerged during the 19th century, the mountain was object of debates about its cultural value for Slavs and Germans. Being a border region between interwar Germany and Czechoslovakia, the Giant Mountains were involved in political and symbolic confrontations of the era. Aer 1945 a new period began with the expulsion of Germans and the resettlement of Poles, and the implementation of a communist tourism model. Since the mid-1950s, the new rulers had to face new challenges with booming tourism in Poland and the bad condition of existing pre-war infrastructure. In this period the decision to build a new observatory and tourist inn on the Śnieżka peak was made. Witold Lipiński's plan of a futuristic and yet economical new construction has been realized in 1967-1974. The “UFO”-called object symbolizes a new chapter in the history of the cultural appropriation of the Giant Mountains. However, as the new post office on the Czech side of the Śnieżka peak and other modern buildings show, there will always be discussions about the how and why of new symbolic markers in the region.
