In spring 2002, three years after planting, the samples of needles were collected from the last whorle of the Abies alba saplings growing under the canopies of Picea abies, Fagus sylvatica, Betula pendula, Pinus sylvestris and Larix decidua to compare their morphological and anatomical traits. To assess acclimation of the photosynthetic apparatus to different light conditions created by the principal species in the canopy, microscopic observations in needles using a binocular and scanning microscope were conducted. A comparison of such needle patterns as: length, width, needle area, stomatal density, parenchyma thickness, resin ducts diameter, central cylinder size and others allowed to determine their structural plasticity in response to site conditions, particularly to irradiance level under the canopy. There was evidence that leaf mass to area ratio, palisade parenchyma thickness, diameter of resin ducts increased with growing canopy openness, whereas width/thickness ratio and needle thickness/ parenchyma thickness inversely, decreased. The investigated patterns of photosynthetic apparatus significantly affected photosynthetic capacity and growth of the young firs. Their variation reflected some structural plasticity and also an ability of silver fir to acclimate to irradiance under the canopies of diverse tree species.
