A use of exclusively local seed sources of silver fir is the pivotal assumption of the fir restitution program in the Karkonosze National Park (KNP). These sources are so small that the natural regeneration and spontaneous re-creation of the species populations are impossible in the Giant Mts. Trees scattered on the territory of the KNP may be the sources of the unique genetic information. Growing individually, they cannot pollinate other trees and they cannot be pollinated. A use of these trees for reproduction can be carried into effect using a collection of their clones in the special plantations called “clone genetic archives”. First, these archives preserve the genotypes. Second, they produce seeds for the program of the species restitution. The archives have to be earlier laid out in order to meet both functions. Three genetic archives established in the KNP protecting 252 fir genotypes will be the seed sources for the local populations. Having its own seed source, the KNP will be able to carry out optionally the program of the restitution of this species.
