In the present paper, results of an experiment with different management of mountain meadows are given. The following regimes were compared: mulched-manured, mulched-unmanured, mowed (and the biomass removed)-manured, mowed-unmanured. Manuring has been done by the compost of local origin. These four kinds of management have been used for three different habitats, characterized by the following plant communities: productive habitat, unmown for long time, characterized by almost continuous stand of Poa chaixii; unproductive habitat with Nardus stricta (Sileno-Nardetum pleurozietosum); productive habitat with mowing in last years (Geranio-Trisetetum melandrietosum). The experiment is going on in the eastern part of the Krkonoše Mts. (the Sudetes), at Rýchory ridge, on the place of settlement of Sněžné Domky (Weiselthäuser). At the same time the decomposition of original local biomass and cellulose in every of those 12 different squares was studied. The influence of manuring and mulching on the structure of the plant species has been significant after two years. The influence of mulching and manuring influenced the community in opposite way. Grasses and sedges (Carex spp.) have increased in the mulched plots and decreased in the manured plots. On the contrary, dicot species increased in the manured plots and decreased in the mulched ones. The decomposition of native biomass had the same rate in all the plots differing in management. The influence of the habitat as a block factor was significant. The decomposition of cellulose (as a standard material) was similar in all the treatments. The factor of habitat was not significant. Neither mulching nor manuring influenced the decomposition rate, probably due to good moisture during the growth period during the experiment. The period of three years is too short for extrapolation of results, so our results should be used carefully.
