Stands of altered species composition in subalpine area of the Giant Mts. are distributed mainly along trails and around chalets. The article compares two methods used to study this non-natural vegetation and their results from a model area of western part of the Giant Mts. Field GPS (Global Positioning System) mapping represents one of the methods. GPS device enables to measure point, line and polygon features with submeter accuracy. The second method is digital analysis and interpretation of aerial photography. Roadside vegetation in the area differs from the surrounding natural vegetation (physiognomy, biomass, cover) enough to be distinguished by aerial photo classification.
