The basic soil units soil types distinguished according to the Classification of Polish Soil (1989), generally well correspond with the relevant reference groups of the FAO-WRB (1998) and soil orders of the US Soil Taxonomy (1998) systems. Whereas the Polish classification bases on the genetic rules, the compared international systems emphasize an accurate complying with the quantitative requirements. Finally only some soil types (particularly on lower level of the classifi-cation) can be correctly correlated on the basis of existing cartographic materials. The correlation of Polish soil units with the FAO (or Soil Taxonomy) units may be difficult in many cases since a number of new morphological and analytical requirements, not applied before in Poland, were introduced to the international soil classification systems.
