Krkonoše/Karkonosze nepožívají stabilní postavení v současných encyklopedických pracích o evropském přírodním dědictví a jejich jméno většinou chybí na mapách renomovaných atlasů. Příčinou malého uznání a malé viditelnosti tohoto pohoří nejsou plošné a výškové limity, nýbrž (A) obecný rozptyl informací o hercynských potažmo sudetských pohořích, (B) redukcionistický přístup v jednotlivých přírodních vědách a humanitních oborech, (C) izolovaný postup při výzkumu severní/slezské a jižní/české strany Krkonoš a (D) jazykové bariéry při tlumočení poznatků směrem k vědeckým centrům v západních zemích.
The Giant Mountains (Krkonoše or Karkonosze in Czech and Polish, respectively) do not enjoy stable position in current encyclopedic work on European natural heritage, and their name is missing on the coarse-scale maps of prestigious atlases. The reason for the lesser appreciation and little visibility cannot be referred to the size and altitude of the Giant Mts. only; it is due to (A) casual dispersion of information referring the Hercynian or Sudetic mountains, (B) reductionistic approach in both the natural sciences and the humanities, (C) fragmented research of the northern/Silesian and southern/Czech flanks, (D) language barrier in the interpretation of the knowledge with regard to the western centres of learning. After four centuries of research in the Giant Mts., an interdisciplinary synthesis of physicol-geographical and geo-ecological knowledge is unsatisfactory and the unique geo-ecological organisation of this range is being insufficiently confronted with comparable elevations of the temperate zone.
