The principal aim of this paper was to prove the applicability of the RAMMS software used for snow avalanche modelling in Alpine-type mountain ranges in the conditions of the Krkonoše/Karkonosze Mountains (the Giant Mts). A snow avalanche from February 10, 2015 was selected as a case study. This avalanche fell in the Modrý důl Valley and is one of the largest ones registered. A total of 36 snow avalanche models were calculated using fixed and variable release heights, digital elevation model resolution, forest cover and different friction coeffi cients, which determine the avalanche path conditions. Results from the fixed and variable triggering heights were compared as well as usage of different resolutions of the digital terrain models. A comparison was made with the snow avalanche path of Velká lavina. The study found that the RAMMS software is applicable in Krkonoše conditions. However, special attention has to be paid to the proper calibrations of input parameters and experience with avalanche modelling. The parameters-friction coeffi cients cannot be transferred automatically from one mountain region to another.
